Are you on board?
Caballito Historic Tram
In a corner of Buenos Aires , precisely in the Caballitoneighbourhood, you can travel back a century in just a few minutes and, curiously, to a quaint European neighbourhood. The masterminds behind this achievement do not come from a tech Company, but from a group of enthusiasts gathered in the Friends of the Tram Association (AAT). Every weekend, dressed in classic uniforms of drivers, ticket sellers and inspectors, these volunteers offer, free of charge, an unparalleled ride aboard the Historic Tram. The journey spans two blocks of one of Buenos Aires’ most hidden and quaint areas: The English District. This unique enclave covers six blocks located between Pedro Goyena, Valle, Emilio Mitre and del Barco Centenera streets, whose architecture is almost identical to that of the working-class neighbourhoods of the London Suburbs.

This notable initiative began with the vision of a handful of enthusiasts who dreamt of reviving the City ’s glorious tramway past. Their idea was ambitious: not only to preserve the memory of these emblematic vehicles, but to see them running once again for everyone to enjoy. To make this dream come true, the Friends of the Tram started a global search. It was in Oporto, Portugal, where they found the key piece: a carriage made in 1927. After its acquisition, a meticulous process of refurbishment followed so it looked identical to the trams of the Lacroze Tramways Company of Buenos Aires. .
Finally, on November 15, 1980, this pioneering carriage took to the streets, marking the beginning of a new era for historic transport in Buenos Aires. Since that inaugural day, the Association has expanded its collection, adding seventeen more carriages, from countries such as Portugal, Belgium and England, as well as some locally built by Fabricaciones Militares, thus creating an invaluable railway heritage.
