There is no doubt, the City of Buenos Aires breathes theatre and has nothing to envy to other great cultural capitals of the world, such as New York, Paris or London. With more than 300 theatres, between the commercial, independent and official circuits, the city's theatre scene is non-stop, with an unimaginable offer of shows that include the most diverse genres. Locally produced plays are regularly premiered, foreign shows are recreated and highly acclaimed hits are generated. With their curtains always up, the city's theatres also perform lyrical works by virtuoso musicians from Argentina and other parts of the world. You can enjoy performances in the official, commercial and independent circuits.
Official circuit
The official circuit is made up of venues of impeccable trajectory and great influence on regional culture, dependent on the Government of the City of Buenos Aires. Classics of universal theatre, music and ballet are performed at affordable prices in large venues such as the Teatro General San Martín, Teatro Colón, and the Teatro Nacional Cervantes. Each of these complexes has been declared a National Historic Monument, and all of them stand out for their exponential architecture and unique styles. Classical plays are performed as well as innovative versions of universal theatre and opera.
Commercial circuit
The commercial offer is constantly multiplying, with most of the theatres concentrated in the vicinity of Avenida Corrientes. Among the most important ones are Lola Membrives, Nacional, Astral, Complejo Teatral La Plaza, Metropolitan and Ópera. There are musicals, comedies, stand up, clown, dramas, tango shows, revues and children's shows.
Independent circuit
Finally, the independent circuit is characterized by avant-garde shows created with very low budgets by emerging and established artists, with very affordable or at-will admission costs. They tend to generate a constant rotation of audiences, and are mostly distributed in small venues in the neighbourhoods of San Telmo, Palermo and in the vicinity of Abasto. Avant-garde plays by young writers are usually performed in refurbished spaces for theatres, usually small, but with an important rotation of audiences, particularly young people. The most renowned theatres are Teatro Beckett, El camarín de las musas, Espacio Callejón, Abasto Social Club, Callejón de los deseos, La carbonera, Celcit, el Piccolino, Chacarerean Theatre and Centro Cultural de la Cooperación, among others.
