Mercados de Pulgas in Buenos Aires are considered to be exclusive places, not only to acquire works of art that are lost in time, but also to renovate houses, flats, offices, shops, businesses and gardens. And, also, to take a different kind of stroll.
The Mercado de Pulgas is a characteristic point of interest in Colegiales neighbourhood, just where Palermo Hollywood district ends. It is located in a large shed where you can find all kinds of curiosities - furniture, paintings, sculptures, marbles, bronzes, crystals, stones, jewellery, silverware, porcelain, musical instruments, clothing, etc. - and where antiques in furniture, works of art and objects of all periods and styles stand out.
All kinds of characters parade through it, amidst the fusion of bohemianism and quality objects, as in a great barter: tarot readers, glass soda siphon sellers, in the midst of shops from the 70s with offers ranging from lamps to furniture and valuable objects. It is located in a huge, roofed area, with toilets and cafés where you can have a drink and rest after all that walking. 150 shops provoke and evoke sensations of the past, of childhood: there are memories here and there, curiosities that awaken the memory.
There are 5 sectors defined by colour zones and 6 shops on Enrique Martinez Street, known as the "Paseo de los Artesanos" (Artisans' Promenade). In addition to the sale of products to the public, restoration services are offered. In the case of furniture, the pieces are polished, glued and polished. It is advisable to go with time to enjoy it to the full.
The Market and its history
The Mercado de Pulgas opened its doors in 1988 and operated for 18 consecutive years until December 2005, when it moved to a nearby site. In 2011 it was reopened in its original location, on Álvarez Thomas and Dorrego streets. The structure and the stands were completely renovated, new lights were installed and better accesses and parking areas were built.
